"Education must also be the means of transmitting a set of values based on a belief in the worth and dignity of every human being. It must teach us how to make hard decisions, to take chances and defy risks; to stretch ourselves to limits that may exceed our grasp....It must teach us in essence how to live, with all the confidence and self-assurance and compassion that are the true measures of educated men and women."

William Winter, from a speech at University of Montevallo, April 11, 1991.

Student Activism

The Winter Institute is proud to be a sponsor or associate of a growing student activism movement on university and secondary school campuses in Mississippi.

The project coordinator of our student outreach programs is David Molina. For more information on getting involved in creating a student group, email David or phone him at 662-915-6734.

One Mississippi

One Mississippi grew out of a 3-day, student-led retreat of 80 University of Mississippi students who convened to address the issue of social segregation on the UM campus. In follow-up to the retreat, the students formed smaller work groups to target what they identified as core issues.
